Tennessee, a state at the heart of the country music scene, is one of those with strict rules on gambling. The state has no racetracks or casinos, though locals can check online horse betting sites. Tennessee initially planned to have its horse racing industry with options for wagering through its 1987 Racing Control Act, but this was not implemented.

The state repealed the Racing Control Act in 2015. In addition, no provision in the Tennessee law code allows poker gambling in the state in both online and in-person formats. Under the laws, poker is another game of chance, making it illegal in the state.

Legal Status of Online Gambling in Tennessee Now

In May 2019, the online gambling landscape in the state changed considerably. The Tennessee legislature passed a bill to allow online sports betting. Beginning July 1, individuals at least 21 years of age residing within Tennessee can place online bets on apps and online gambling sites licensed by the state. As mentioned, Tennessee doesn’t have physical casinos, so residents cannot place bets physically.

Sen. Steve Dickerson, R-Nashville, and Rep. Rick Staples, D-Knoxville, introduced the bill to legalize online sports betting in the state. In the proposal, no physical sites are allowed to take real money bets. The Bill passed the Senate vote 19-12 and the House 58-37, with some amendments. From the start, Gov. Bill Lee has been opposed to legalized gambling but has come on record to allow the legislation.

Under the law, only players at least 21 can bet. In addition, the legislation also indicates the people prohibited from placing their bets, including team owners, athletes, and people with influence over the outcome. If you’re allowed to bet, you can do so on state-approved online gambling sites, and users must provide their state when placing bets.

Is Bitcoin and Crypto Betting Legal in Tennessee State?

The approval of the legislation comes at a time when Bitcoin and crypto gambling is becoming more popular. As an emerging casino payment, Bitcoin and other cryptos provide players a safe, private, and seamless way of completing payments. However, most state-run and approved casinos don’t support Bitcoin and altcoins, so players consider offshore licensed casinos.

As such, many players explore gambling in these online casinos. In addition to the benefits of Bitcoin and altcoins in terms of security and convenience, crypto casinos also feature more extensive and innovative casino bonuses like free cryptos and access to provably fair games. It also helps that Bitcoin and crypto betting falls in gambling’s ‘grey area’. No local laws prohibit access, and players are not penalized for accessing these sites by the state.

While it’s possible to access these offshore licensed casinos from the state, it doesn’t mean that you simply register and play on the first crypto site you’ll see. Like the choice of regular casinos, it’s still crucial to assess and compare Bitcoin casinos based on security, bonuses, game availability, and customer support.
