In Kansas, gambling has played a crucial role in its colorful history. Before the whites arrived, American Indians had been betting on games and footraces. During the 19th century, locals played several forms of games in many saloons. Some of the most popular games were Hazard,  Red, and Black played with two decks of cards, Monte and Keno.

Although gambling was a popular leisure activity for many residents, some reformers saw it as a problem. Thus, begins the tightening of regulations on gambling for residents of Kansas. The prohibition started in 1868, then allowed gambling in fairs by 1895, but soon prohibited slot machines in 1903. But in 1986, Kansas lawmakers allowed parimutuel wagering and lottery. Nevertheless, the state’s strict rules continue until today, when only a few forms of gambling are permitted for residents.

Legal Status of Gambling in Kansas

Like other US states, some forms of gambling are legal in Kansas, but many are off-limits to residents. Kansas Constitution spells out the rules on what forms of gambling are permitted and their specific requirements. For example, according to Article 15, Section 3 of the Kansas Constitution, lotteries and the sale of their tickets are not allowed except if these are run by licensed and regulated, non-profit, charitable, and educational organizations. In addition, betting on horse races and parimutuel wagering are only allowed if these are in state-licensed and regulated counties.

In addition to Kansas Lottery, there is also casino-style gambling that is regulated by the state. There are 11 regulated casinos in the state located in Mulvane, Kansas City, Dodge City, and Horton, among others. Players can enjoy various electronic gaming machines in these gambling facilities, like poker and slot machines.  Also, gambling at tribal casinos is legal, but all other types of gambling are not allowed. Currently, regulated gambling in the state brings $661 million in revenues (2021).

Updated Legal Status of Sports Betting and Rise of Crypto Gambling

Thanks to the recent push by the lawmakers,  sports fans in Kansas can now enjoy betting starting September 1. Sports betting is now legal in Kansas thanks to Senate Bill 84, which ended with bipartisan support. With this development, at least 12 sportsbooks will be downloaded in the state based on open licenses. But only six were live during the ‘soft launch’ this September.

Bitcoin and altcoins offer individuals an alternative way to bet quickly, securely, and anonymously. Bitcoin is decentralized, so no single group controls the system, thus fast-tracking transactions and cutting costs. Also, decentralized blockchains are immutable, meaning it is irreversible.

All these benefits help shape gambling online for the better. For example, in addition to payments in online casinos, Bitcoin and cryptos are widely accepted in many businesses in Kansas. Currently, no laws regulate Bitcoin and cryptos for gambling or as payment for goods and services. As a result, Kansas players who want to gamble using Bitcoin may do so in offshore licensed casinos that accept US players. But since these are beyond the state’s jurisdiction, there’s no consumer protection in place.
