Drake’s reputation as a daring sports bettor was tested again, but this time, the “Drake Curse” proved too strong.
Canadian rapper Drake, who put a hefty $210,000 bet on the Men’s Tennis Singles Final in the US Open 2024, lost his bet. Drake had favored the underdog Taylor Fritz with 3.85 odds in his match against the World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. If Fritz had won, Drake would have won $808,500.
But the US Open 2024’s Men’s Tennis Singles Final played at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York went in favor of Jannik Sinner, who defeated Taylor Fritz in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. It is Jannik Sinner’s second Grand Slam in 2024, with the Australian Open in January being the maiden Slam title. Fritz was playing his first Grand Slam final ever.
‘Drake Curse’ Endures
Drake, one of the most daring sports bettors in history, placed $500,000 bets each on NBL and Stanley Cup finals in June 2024. Drake lost both his bets and took a setback of $1 million.
Due to many high-roller sports bets he placed and lost to date, people jokingly say that he brings bad luck or the ‘Drake Curse’ to the team he supports. With his money lost on underdog Fritz, the ‘Drake Curse’ jokes keep going around.
Drake’s Major Wins and Losses
Several of Drake’s bets have been successful, too. In February, Drake favored the Kansas City Chiefs, beating the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl (NFL) with a $1.15 million bet. The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl, and Drake took home a cool $2.34 million.
Among his significant losses are his $1 million bet on Argentina to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Canadian $2 million bet on Israel Adesanya to win his fight against Alex Pereira in the UFC 287 title fight in November 2022.
